Middle River Texaco Making a Difference

Article & photo by Lena Sala

Ever since Feb. 27, 2010, the Middle River Texaco on Pulaski Highway has been under new management. Owners Terry and Ken Moore decided to take over the business so they could give the Middle River community a fresh start. My husband Ken and I thought taking over ownership of the Texaco here in Middle River would be a great opportunity for us, since the Texaco that we formerly worked at in Bel Air had been sold, Terry explained. After hearing the past reputation of this gas station, we decided that we wanted to turn things around and make it the neighborhood convenient store that this community deserves. According to David Pennington, Manager of the Middle River Texaco, the Texaco in Bel Air won Best Convenient Store and Best Texaco in Maryland/Deleware/Washington D.C, two years in a row while Terry and Ken Moore were employed there. The award was given out by the Washington, Maryland, Delaware Service Station and Automotive Repair Association (WMDA). This WMDA is a trade association, serving independent women and men of convenience stores, service stations and more. Terry is one of my best friends and no matter where she goes, she works hard and puts forth an extreme amount of dedication. She and her husband can bring only positivity and turn what once was a nightmare into a friendly and clean place where you can find great service, which sets us apart from the competition, explained Pennington. Great service is what the Middle River Texaco is all about. During the entire month of May, the gas station is offering Full Service Fridays, where the employees will pump your gas and wash your windows. Also, every Saturday, weather permitting, you can stop by and grab a hot dog for just 99 cents in the tent out front of the Texaco. Not only does the Middle River Texaco provide fuel supply to the community, but you can also find an ATM if you need some cash while youre on the go, and if you withdraw $20 or more out of the ATM at this Texaco, you can stop in the Corner Mart and grab a free 2-liter bottle of soda. The Corner Mart is a convenience store, located right in the same parking lot as the gas station, and includes milk, snacks, cigarettes and fresh sandwiches. Also, anyone who is an active or retired member of the military can stop in for a free cup of coffee or a fountain drink as the Texacos way to say thank you for your service. Each month the Moores print up a calendar of events for customers to pick up and see what sales and promotions to look out for. Throughout the month of May, the Middle River Texaco has been accepting donations for the St. Jude Childrens Research Hospital, which is located in Memphis, TN. So far the Texaco has raised $75. Petroleum Marketing Group, an established regional distributor and jobber of petroleum products and services active in the Mid-Atlantic region of the U.S., got together with St. Jude Childrens Research Hospital to help raise money for children suffering with cancer. Along with the Middle River Texaco, five other stores in the community, including Chevron, Citgo, Crown and Shell, which are also owned by PMG, are accepting donations. On May 22, the Acapella-Doo-Wop group, Smooth Teaze 8 will be at the Middle River Texaco at 1 p.m., to help with raising money for the children. This day will not only include great music but a variety of food. All proceeds from the food sales will go straight to St. Jude Childrens Research Hospital. The Moores are hoping to raise $500 by the end of May. So make sure to stop on over and enjoy some great tunes, while helping to save the lives of children with your donations. Middle River Texaco, located at 9526 Pulaski Highway, is open from 5 a.m. - 10 p.m. everday. For more information, call 410-574-4317.
