Clendaniel Seeks House of Delegates Bid in 6th District
- by Ben Boehl -

Carlton Clendaniel is frustrated by tax increases in Maryland and decided to run for the House of Delegates in the 6th Legislative District. The Dundalk resident is running on the Republican ticket with Bob Long and Ric Metzgar. They are running against Democratic incumbents John Olszewski, Jr., Sonny Minnick and Mike Weir, Jr.
Clendaniel’s message is “more jobs and less taxes,” He stated “Maryland is not friendly for small businesses. We need to create jobs. Jobs are the engines that drive our society.”
He estimated there are around 4,000 small businesses in the 6th District and is concerned about the survival of those small businesses. Clendaniel would try to repeal the state’s sale tax from six percent back to five percent to help Maryland families and would also like to cut back the corporate tax from 8.25 percent back to seven percent to help businesses.
“The more money you put into the private sector, the more taxes you can obtain from their profits. It’s not the other way around,” Clendaniel explained. “I believe Maryland can become a state where businesses will relocate back to the state and businesses can thrive and hire new employees.”
A decrease in the state’s pension tax is also on Clendaniel’s agenda. He believes that tax punishes Maryland’s seniors.
“We need to keep our retirees in the state of Maryland instead of having them leave for Delaware and Pennsylvania,” he said.
Clendaniel claims he has the experience to balance the budget, as he was a pastor for 16 years and a secretary of the Baltimore Educational Advisory Council. He learned that a person or organization doesn’t always get what they want, or need, if there wasn’t enough money in the budget. He feels the same needs to be true for government.
Like many Republicans, Clendaniel hopes to take advantage of former Gov. Bob Ehrlich’s popularity in the 6th District. He didn’t seek an endorsement from Ehrlich but was honored when he received one. Clendaniel is excited that he can use the “Ehrlich” name on his lawn signs.
“Bob Ehrlich has the best interest for our state. He is the right person to get the state back in the right direction by creating jobs and lowing taxes.”
Clendaniel is for the 2nd Amendment because he believes citizens should be able to hunt and protect their families from criminals and wants to see tougher laws on illegal immigration.
Clendaniel wants to improve the quality of life in the 6th District.
“The voters want a delegate who understands their pride for the hardworking families of Essex, Rosedale, Dundalk and Edgemere. As a delegate, I want to see the families keep more of their money to spend the way that they choose, to keep the jobs that they like and be able to retire where they now live.”
