Former
Delegate Ken Holt to Run for County Executive
|
Ken Holt, a longtime
community activist, member of the Baltimore business community and
former member of the Maryland General Assembly, has announced he is
running for Baltimore County Executive.
Holt, who retired from public service after leaving the legislature in
1998, is running for county executive because he believes his combined
experiences as a legislator, community activist and businessman have
uniquely prepared him to address the serious budgetary challenges
Baltimore County is presently facing. “The citizens of Baltimore County
have a looming $150 million budget shortfall in our immediate future,”
Holt stated. “No one else is even talking about it, let alone offering
the kinds of clear, specific solutions Baltimore County residents
deserve.”
Holt will spend the next several weeks visiting community centers and
organizations across Baltimore County to solicit citizens’ views on the
budget crisis, job creation, infrastructure improvements and ways to
improve accountability in local government. He also plans to host
workshops on what the county must do to regain financial stability.
“These conversations will be a big part of my decision-making process,”
Holt stated. “After 16 years of one-party rule, I’d like to know if
people are content with status quo solutions, or if they really do
desire a new way of doing business - one focused on transparency,
accountability and results.
“There is a difference between public service and politics. I don’t
want a political job - I have a career I already enjoy. But, the
serious budgetary challenges we’re facing necessitate that someone step
forward as a public servant and offer concrete solutions learned from
real life experiences. In times like these, government will have to
learn to live with less so citizens can live with more.”
Holt has worked at Morgan Stanley Smith Barney for 25 years, where he
is presently a Senior Vice President and Portfolio Manager. Holt will
take a leave of absence from his work responsibilities to conduct his
listening tour across the county.
Holt’s community activism includes serving as past president of the
Baltimore County Police Foundation and the Greater Kingsville Civic
Association; past treasurer of the Friends of Jerusalem Mill,
Foundation for the Preservation of Government House and the Maryland
Portrait Foundation; and past member of the Baltimore County Master
Plan Advisory Committee and the Baltimore County Human Relations
Commission. As a member of the Maryland General Assembly, Holt served
on the Appropriations and Education and Economic Development committees.
Holt is a resident of Kingsville, where he lives with his wife Mary,
his daughter Svetlana, son Chris, daughter-in-law Kate and grandchild
Kailey. Together they operate Mount Peru, a working family farm.
