| Sussex Elementary Gets
Gold Again |
Sussex Elementary was recently
recognized as a PBIS Maryland Gold
Exemplar school for the fourth consecutive year. This is the highest
level recognized by the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE)
for the Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports program that
emphasizes improving student academic and behavior outcomes.
Sussex Elementary, located at 515 South Woodward Dr., has been
successful in implementing and sustaining a school-wide program that
shows creativity in engaging students and effective rewards systems. A
key component, according to Ms. Leslie Ellis, PBIS coordinator at
Sussex, “ is integrating PBIS into daily activities across available
teaching opportunities, not just our classrooms.”
The school collected data showing systems and practices of the PBIS
program had positive effects on both discipline and achievement data
over the past two years. During that time frame, Sussex continued to
show a decrease in overall number of office referrals, a decrease in
the number of school suspensions and an increase in student achievement
data (MSA scores).
Sussex Elementary was one of only two elementary schools selected
to present to the Baltimore County Returning Schools Team Training at
PBIS Maryland 2009 Summer Institute.
