On Friday,
Feb. 3, students of Chase Elementary School gathered inside their gymnasium
to participate in Jump Rope for Heart to show their support for the
American Heart Association by jumping rope for 35 minutes. According
to Physical Education teacher, Gina Sherwood, students in each grade
level visited with her for a 50-minute session during their special
area class. Each grade will come down to the gym at a different time
and will be active for the majority of the class, explained Sherwood.
During the 35 minutes they are allowed to take breathers and water breaks.
Once the 35 minutes is up, we have them participate in two more exercises
including the Cha Cha Slide and limbo. Sherwood revealed this is the
first time that Chase Elementary has participated in Jump Rope for Heart
and have raised over $2,000. Approximately a month prior to todays event,
we handed out packets to students explaining to them about the American
Heart Association and that we wanted to make a generous donation for
such an important cause, said Sherwood. When discussing the matter,
we stressed the importance of only asking people they know and their
parents know, because we didnt want them going around door-to-door.
Sherwood noted that she only had a goal of $1,500 and is extremely pleased
with students and their parents who have worked hard to supersede her
expectations. Fifth grade student, Josie TerBorg says she is very happy
to help people with heart conditions. It makes me feel good to participate
in fun activities and to raise money for these people who need our help,
commented TerBorg. Principal Douglas Elmendorf and faculty also picked
up a jump rope and joined the fun and excitement. I am extremely impressed
with the effort from students and parents, concluded Elmendorf.
