Whether youre looking for a deal on some used merchandise like jewelry, electronics or musical instruments or if youre in need of a cash loan, Essex Pawn is the place to go. Owned and operated by Howard Dubick since 1991, the business started as a small jewelry store on Back River Neck Road. Customers often asked if I pawned, Dubick explained, adding he didnt even know what it was at the time. He looked into it and started small. For those unfamiliar, a pawnshop is a business that offers secured loans to people in exchange for items of property used as collateral. When a customer comes in to pawn an item for a loan, that person may purchase the item back for the amount of the loan plus interest within a certain contractual period of time. If the loan is not paid back within the agreed upon time period, the pawned item will be offered for sale by the pawn shop. Since the shop has physical possession of the item and may recoup the loan value through the sale of the item, pawnshops do not report the defaulted loan on the customers credit report like other lenders. Customers may also sell their items to a pawn shop. Usually, a pawn shop carries a wealth of stuff, as evidenced by Essex Pawn. The shop has grown from a 400-square-foot to a 6,000-square-foot space. In fact, the store recently expanded, taking over retail space beside it that had been vacant for a long time. Essex Pawn features an impressive array of jewelry, including lots of diamond rings. Though its a pawn shop, Dubick noted they have a jeweler and do repairs, sizing and even custom jewelry. In addition to jewelry, customers will also find antiques, musical instruments, tools, electonics and much more. Weve been here a long time, said Dubick. We have great prices and pay well for merchandise. Right now, gold buying is going strong. Dubick said they will meet or beat competitors prices, within reason. Known as the biggest and cleanest pawn shop in the Baltimore area, its also one of the friendliest. The knowledgable staff is ready to serve you and answer any questions you may have. Dubick also stressed they always get ID from those looking to pawn merchandise and they run everything through the police to make sure items arent stolen. In fact, the pawn shop was recently honored with a Distinguished Citizen Award from the police department. Essex Pawn Shop is located at 138 Eastern Blvd. Open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. - 7 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. For more information, call 410-687-5045 or visit www.essexpawn.com.
