Editors Note: Although our usual restaurant reviews are titled Dining Out, since the focus is on a local sit-down full-serve restaurant, this time we are reviewing an establishment that offers only carry-out and limited delivery, so weve titled it Dining In. Incredibly delicious, really flavorful and OMG! are just a few of the comments I heard around the lunch table at the office when we had food brought in to us from Little Lous Seafood in Rosedale last week. Although the carry-out has been in the area since 1997, this was my first introduction to Little Lous. I predict it will be the beginning of a beautiful friendship. When Little Lou Thuerrauch purchased the business, it was a deli that made its own sub rolls. That tradition carried on, and Little Lous fresh baked rolls really separate his sandwiches from those of his competitors. In fact, according to Little Lou himself, everything (with the exception of the fried shrimp) is made from scratch. I love to cook, explains Thuerrauch, a self-taught restauranteur and chef. Born and raised in Essex, Thuerrauchs family is no stranger to the Chesapeake Bay. Ive got a background in seafood, he explained. My grandfather was a waterman. This local waterman experience allows Thuerrauch to obtain the best, freshest seafood possible. And it is truly scrumptious seafood too! My coworkers and I were treated to a Valentines Day feast! We indulged in a variety of delicious fare such as pasta and potato salads, shrimp salad subs, crab balls, crab pretzels, cod fish cakes, cheesesteak egg rolls and much, much more. Every single item was so incredibly tasty, we all ate more than we should have and enjoyed every bite of it! I filled up my plate until it was overflowing. First I sampled the salads. The red-skinned potato salad was fabulous and the shrimp macaroni salad was extremely tasty, packed with flavorful spices. There was also a more traditional Italian style pasta salad that was simply out of this world. One coworker remarked, I normally dont even like pasta salad, but this is fantastic! The steamed shrimp with onions were cooked to perfection, succulent and very flavorful. The crab balls were great, filled with fresh, tasty chunks of crabmeat and seasoned just right. The crab pretzel was just to-die-for. For one thing, the pretzels are huge and covered with delectable crap dip and loaded with cheese. The crab pretzel just melts in your mouth, one coworker remarked. The shrimp salad sub was bursting with flavor, featuring plump, juicy shrimp seasoned just right on a fresh baked sub roll. Delish! One of the stars of our lunch was the Cheesesteak Egg Rolls. Packed full of tender, thin sliced beef, peppers and onions and melted cheese, its everything you love about a cheesesteak rolled up and fried in a crispy egg roll wrapper. Incredibly yummy! But, Id have to stay the stand out was Little Lous famous codfish cakes. This is the best codfish cake Ive ever eaten! one coworker exclaimed. With a crust reminiscent of a hushpuppy, combined with the superb texture and taste of the filling, this is one tasty cake. Everyone in the office who tried one raved about it. Seems were not the only ones head over heels for these babies. People drive from all over for our cod cakes, Thuerrauch explained, noting the famous cakes are his grandmothers recipe. Another family recipe is his mothers Shrimp Creole, which was a hit at our office as well. It takes you back to Nawlins, one coworker quipped. Another noted, It has a nice, spicy flavor but its not overwhelming. Not only was all the food we tried from Little Lous extremely delicious, but the prices are incredibly reasonable.
