BENSTORMING

- by Ben Boehl -
Will Anyone Admit They Live in Nottingham?

If you ask anyone who lives in the White Marsh/Perry Hall area, they will tell you they live in, well, White Marsh or Perry Hall. But there is a good chance they might actually live in Nottingham, which is the 21236 zip code. For example, White Marsh Mall is located in the Nottingham zip code. The actual White Marsh zip code covers the Route 40 corridor from White Marsh Boulevard all the way to the Harford County line. So shouldn’t it have been called Nottingham Mall? (It doesn’t have the same ring to it as White Marsh Mall.) What about all the “Perry Hall” places? The Perry Hall Crossing and Perry Hall Square shopping centers are located in the Nottingham zip code. Perry Hall elementary, middle and high schools are also located in 21236, so why aren’t they called Nottingham schools? Ironically, Chapel Hill and Joppa View elementary schools are located in the Perry Hall zip code (21128). That zip code covers many of the new homes north of Honeygo Park. At least the new Perry Hall Library is located in the Perry Hall zip.
According to the Census, the White Marsh zip has a population around 2,800 and the Perry Hall zip has around 6,700 residents. That’s nothing compared to the 21236 zip code, as Nottingham has a population of over 37,000. So why does Nottingham get no love? Shouldn’t the residents of the Perry Hall and White Marsh be trying to latch onto the Nottingham name instead of it being the other way around? I guess I’m a hypocrite because I live in 21236 and claim to live in Perry Hall, but I didn’t know any better. I just moved to the area two years ago, but it was called “Perry Hall” when I moved into my Nottingham neighborhood.
Essex Resident Receives Scholarship
Congratulations to Essex resident Colleen Muchla. She was one of six students to receive a $2,000 scholarship from AMF Bowling Centers. The scholarship will help with her undergraduate studies at Towson University. She is the daughter of Dennis and Robin Mitsock.
According to a press release from AMF, winners are selected based on “academic record, demonstrated leadership, statement of goals and aspirations and participation in school and community activities, among other variables.” The student must also be a dependent child of an AMF employee.
