Vincent Farm Students Snuggle Up and Read
One of the advantages of opening a new school
is the ability to create
new traditions. Principal Anne Gold of Vincent Farm Elementary School
started a new tradition on Dec. 16 with the First Annual Snuggle Up and
Read evening. Parents were encouraged to dress their children in their
pajamas and come in to school for an evening of reading and snuggling
as a family. The kids were allowed to pick two books to be read to them
from a list of 16. Teachers, many also dressed in their pjs, read the
books aloud with the students and parents in their classrooms.
After the second session, everyone gathered in the cafeteria where the
PTA, led by President Barbara Sines, served hot chocolate while Mom and
Dad read one of their favorite books to their children. Everyone could
also browse through all the books for sale at the school's book
fair.
Judging from the packed cafeteria and
enthusiastic crowd, this appears
to be a very popular tradition in the making. click here for a
slideshow of the evening.

Mt. Carmel Students Get a Visit From
Soldier
The Students at Mt. Carmel
Elementary School got to meet a real American Hero, Master Sergeant
Paul M. Blitz, for Veterans Day at the school. While many may call
Blitz a hero, he humbly disagrees.
"I have to tell you, I'm not a hero. I have never fired a shot and
never been shot at, but I'm very proud we took 204 soldiers overseas
and we brought back 204 soldiers home," he said.
Blitz has served 16 years in the army and is a member of the 200th
Military Police Command. He lives in Essex, is a historian for The
Heritage Society of Essex & Middle River and teaches at a private
school in Pikesville. He served over in Iraq from 2004-05.
Blitz told the students stories of what it was like to serve in the
military. He said that one year in Iraq was tough, from sleeping in a
30-person tent to carrying 60 lbs. of body gear and walking in a desert
that is 140 degrees in the day and only 40 degrees at night. But Blitz
recalls many great experiences like traveling across the world. Blitz
hasbeen to Italy, England, France, Switzerland, Spain and many other
countries. He said a soldier gets to see the world.

Overlea Resident Plays at
White House
Overlea resident David Kalwa got
to go to the White House. He was one of 120 middle and high school
students across the nation to be invited by First Lady Michelle Obama
to the world's most famous house on Nov. 4.
"I didn't know what to expect, but it was real humbling to see all
those pictures on the wall. That was a lot of history," Kalwa said.
The event was called the White House Music Series. This is the fourth
year of the event and the White House invited the best violinist,
cellist, guitarist and pianist students in the country to perform with
violinist Joshua Bell, cellist Alisa Weilerstein, guitarist Sharon
Isbin and pianist Awadagin Pratt. Kalwa is a senior at Baltimore School
for the Arts (BSA) who was selected because of his ability to play the
guitar. He got a break because The VH1 Save The Music Foundation
coordinated the event and has a working relationship with BSA. A
representative at VH1 contacted BSA Music Department Chair Dr. Chris
Ford, asking him if there were any of his students that played the four
instruments. Ford was able to send Nana Adjeiwaa-Manu, a sophomore who
plays the violin and cello, and Kalwa.

Katie Calkins
|
The Maryland Art Education
Association named two local teachers as art teachers of the year. Grace
Hulse of Orems Elementary School was named Elementary Teacher of the
Year and Katie Calkins of Patapsco High School and Center for the Arts
was named High School Teacher of the Year.
Hulse has been teaching for 20 years and has been at Orems for the past
11 years. "It's a nice little neighborhood. I like that the school is
small because you get to know everybody," Hulse said.
She holds a photography club after school and took her children on a
field trip to Martin State Airport at the Aviation Museum to inspire
them for a project.
Calkins has taught at Patapsco for the past 10 years and has also been
a teacher for 20 years. She spent her first 10 years at Middle River
Middle School. Calkins was nominated by Linda Popp, BCPS Coordinator of
Art, and found out she won in an e-mail. Calkins enjoys teaching
because she gets the chance to challenge students and unlock their
potential.

As part of the CCBC-Dundalk
Honors Program “Mind of the Performer” series, Nestor Aparicio met with
about 50 CCBC students last Friday. Aparicio is co-owner of WNST

website that he calls “a product that is seen around the world.”
Aparicio grew up in Dundalk,
attended Dundalk High School and CCBC-Dundalk. His mother still lives
around the corner. He started as a sports writer for The Baltimore Sun;
he's worked at the News American,
for syndicated radio and is somewhat
of a local celebrity in the sports radio world. But according to
Aparicio, the ability to write “opened every door in my life.” He
credits his writing skills with getting him “every job, every date,
everything I ever wanted” and he urged the students attending to
understand that writing is fundamental in everything they do.

Franklin Square Provides
Backpacks to
Sandy
Plains
When
parents and students of Sandy Plains Elementary
School went to the
school on Friday, they thought they were getting just a sneak peek of
their classroom for the 2009-10 school year. What they didn’t know was
Franklin Square Hospital was providing them with a new backpack filled
with school supplies. The hospital provided the backpacks, and the
nurses and staff purchased the supplies and filled the backpacks in
accord with the lists provided by the school.
“Franklin Square nurses have always cared for their community,”
explains Larry Strassner, PhD, RN, chief nursing officer at Franklin
Square. “But this year, they wanted to make sure their own colleagues
were taken care of as well.”
Parents were grateful for the gifts.
